The Welsh Rugby Union has confirmed that it is looking at installing an artificial pitch in the Millennium Stadium.
The turf has to be relaid several times a year as the steep sides of the facility prevent sunlight reaches the playing surface.
The stadium is primarily used for Wales's home rugby matches, but is also used by the national football team, and regularly hosts music events.
WRU Chief Executive Roger Lewis told The Sunday Times: "[An artificial pitch] is being given serious consideration. We are looking at the implications.
"They use some very serious trucks for their equipment [at music shows]. We'd need to be satisfied that the new surface can take it."
The Cardiff venue is due to host six games in the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
