The Welsh Rugby Union have confirmed that Gavin Henson will be out of action for up to eight weeks.
The 29-year-old centre underwent corrective surgery after dislocating a bone in his right wrist during Wales' 19-9 victory over England in Cardiff yesterday.
Henson will now miss the start of the World Cup in New Zealand but the WRU have revealed that he will remain in the care of their medical team to ensure he returns to full fitness at the earliest opportunity.
"Gavin underwent surgery this (Sunday) morning, to correct the dislocation to a bone in his right wrist," said national medical performance manager Prav Mathema.
"He has been given a return to play time of six to eight weeks. While ruling him out of selection for the initial World Cup squad, we could see him available to the coaches while we are still in the Pool stages of the tournament."
Wales' first World Cup fixture is against South Africa on Sunday, September 11.
