Juan Martin del Potro reaches the last eight at Roland Garros after a 7-6 1-6 6-3 7-5 victory over Tomas Berdych.

Juan Martin del Potro has ousted Tomas Berdych to the reach the French Open quarter-finals.

Play began between the pair on the Suzanne Lenglen court on Sunday and the first set was extremely close.

It went to a tie-break and at six apiece it was Argentinian Del Potro who snatched a pair of points to grab the opener.

Czech Berdych, who had held a two-point lead in the breaker, was not to be deterred and he gained an early break in the second before romping to a 6-1 success to level the match.

The topsy-turvy nature of the clash between the two towering men continued as this time Del Potro secured an early break in the third before holding on to his serve and taking the set 6-3.

Play was then suspended because of bad light in the French capital and upon the resumption it was Del Potro who came out of the blocks quicker on Monday.

He broke seventh-seed Berdych's serve at the first opportunity and closed in on victory by advancing to a 4-2 lead.

Berdych would not however roll over and he broke back to level the fourth.

At 5-6 Berdych produced a couple of languid serves as Del Potro came within a couple of points of victory.

This time the former US Open champion didn't buckle and held his nerve to close out the match in just under three-and-a-half hours.

World number three Roger Federer awaits Del Potro in the quarter-finals at Roland Garros.
