World number two Maria Sharapova has ruled herself out of the China Open due to an ankle injury.
The 24-year-old was forced to drop out of the Pan-Pacific Open after twisting her ankle in the quarter-final against Petra Kvitova.
"The good news is the MRI scan showed no big damage to my ankle," Sharapova told her official website. "I will do my best to recover in time for Istanbul."
US Open finalist Serena Williams has also pulled out of the women's event while world number one Novak Djokovic is missing the tournament while he recovers from a back injury.
