Juan Monaco secures second-round spot in straight sets

Juan Monaco will fight another day at Wimbledon after securing a first-round victory over Leonardo Mayer.

Juan Monaco has clinched a spot in the second round at SW19 following a 6-4 7-6[5] 7-6[5] victory over Leonardo Mayer.

Monaco managed to take an early advantage over his fellow countryman by grabbing a break of serve and surging through the first set following a host of impressive backhand shots and returns.

The second set was a close affair, with Mayer launching a comeback and forcing the set to to a tie-break, but it was Monaco who remained composed and took a crucial two-set lead on the grass court.

The third set continued tight between the duo with games going by the way of serve but Monaco managed to overcome his opponent and prevented the 25-year-old from forcing through a fourth set.
