Aston Villa are reportedly on the brink of signing a player that has just been relegated with another club in the Premier League.

Aston Villa are reportedly closing in on the summer addition of Luton Town midfielder Ross Barkley.

Although Villa concluded the campaign with an embarrassing 5-0 defeat at Crystal Palace, it has been otherwise successful campaign in the Premier League.

Unai Emery has guided Villa to their first-ever appearance in the Champions League courtesy of finishing in fourth position in the standings.

As a result, the Spaniard will now work diligently with the club's recruitment team in order to make signings that make sense for the club at a time when they are somewhat restricted by financial regulations.

Villa have work to do in order to fulfil the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules, even with the benefit of revenue that will come from the continent.

The West Midlands outfit are in a position where they may have to consider player sales in order to work themselves into a satisfactory state ahead of taking on more high-profile fixtures in 2024-25.

Villa closing in on Barkley deal

According to The Guardian, Villa have wasted no time in trying to add to their squad in a bid to steal a march on some of their rivals.

The perception was that Barkley was in somewhat of a last-chance saloon when being offered the opportunity to sign for newly-promoted Luton after his exit from Nice.

Not only has Barkley being able to earn regular football with the Hatters, he has showcased his qualities in the centre of the pitch on a consistent basis.

Barkley has made a total of 30 starts and two substitute outings in the Premier League, contributing with five goals and four assists for the relegated side.

While the 30-year-old's contract length has never been disclosed, it is alleged he is on a deal that will 'run into next season'.

Nevertheless, with Luton now operating at a lower budget courtesy of their return to the Championship, retaining the services of the England international is not realistic.

Barkley, Villa no strangers to each other

When Barkley fell out of favour at Chelsea at the beginning of 2020-21, it was Villa who presented the playmaker with a lifeline.

He would go on to make 18 starts and six substitute outings in the Premier League, chipping in with three goals and one assist while on loan.

Three seasons on from his last appearance for the Birmingham-based side, it now appears Barkley could be returning to play Champions League football with a more senior role attached to his shoulders.
