The Spanish champions are believed to be seeking a new centre-forward to challenge and potentially ultimately replace Luis Suarez in the final third of the field.

According to Diario Sport, Ernesto Valverde's side are closing in on a swoop for Rodrigo, who has a £106m release clause in his contract at the Mestalla.

A 17-time Spain international, Rodrigo started his career with Real Madrid but did not make a first-team appearance for Los Blancos ahead of a switch to Benfica in 2010.

The attacker also turned out for Bolton Wanderers in the Premier League during the the 2010-11 season.
