The Confederation Cup winners went into the game on the back of six consecutive wins, but the hosts' form was equally impressive.
Switzerland were without a loss in nine and they rightly looked full of confidence during the opening 45 minutes, which they dominated without reward.
However, the deadlock was broken early in the second half as an unlucky deflection saw Dani Alves register the first own goal of his international career.
Switzerland came close to adding a second, but goalkeeper Jefferson was in fine form for Brazil, making four solid saves.
