Roberto Martinez "very proud" of Everton performance

Roberto Martinez takes pride in the way his Everton team defended during the second half of tonight's 1-0 victory over Chelsea.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has said that he is "very proud" of his team's 1-0 win over Chelsea at Goodison Park.

The Spaniard oversaw the first Premier League victory of his reign thanks to Steven Naismith's goal in first-half stoppage time.

The Merseysiders came under sustained pressure in the second half, but Martinez is delighted with the way his players defended.

"It feels really good because it was a special game, a special opposition and a very good performance," Martinez told Sky Sports News.

"You could see at the beginning we tried to get on the ball and tried to impose ourselves on the game, but I thought the intensity in which we defended in the second half was superb.

"We always carried a threat upfront as well. It was one of those performances where, as a manager, you are very proud of it."

The result also signals Chelsea's first defeat of the new Premier League campaign.
