Former England manager Graham Taylor has dismissed Sol Campbell's claim that he was denied captaining the national team because of his race.
Campbell, who played 73 times for the Three Lions between 1996 and 2007, makes the allegation in his latest biography.
However, Taylor believes that the 39-year-old is only trying to gain publicity for his new book.
"During my time as England manager I never had any influence from the FA on who should be England captain regarding a player's race," he told BBC Sport.
"I gave the captaincy to Paul Ince and I was never given the impression by the FA that I should not have given it to him.
"Sol is making a real go of giving his book a good sell. I cannot go along with what he is saying."
Taylor managed England between 1990 and 1993.
