Schalke 04 edge out Freiburg to secure the final Champions League place in the Bundesliga.

Schalke 04 guaranteed themselves the final Champions League spot in the Bundesliga with a 2-1 win over European rivals Freiburg at the Mage Solar Stadion.

An own goal from Immanuel Hohn gave the visitors the win after Jonathan Schmid had cancelled out Julian Draxler's opener.

Hohn had a good chance to put the hosts a goal up, but he skied his effort over the crossbar from the edge of the six-yard box.

However, it was the away side who went in front when the returning Draxler slammed a shot from outside the box into the bottom right corner to give Schalke the lead.

Both sides had chances shortly after the goal; first Raffael fired just wide for the visitors and then Freiburg's Jan Rosenthal forced a save from Timo Hildebrand.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Jermaine Jones and Raffael all came close to doubling Schalke's lead, but Freiburg stood firm heading into the break.

It didn't take long for the hosts to draw level in the second half, when Schmid played a one-two with Max Kruse before slamming the return into the back of the net.

However, it took Schalke just four minutes to reclaim the lead, when Hohn put the ball into his own net.
