Mohamed Salah equals Premier League record in Liverpool win over Leeds United

Liverpool's Mohamed Salah equals a Premier League record with his landmark opening goal against Leeds, and goes on to set more as he claims a hat-trick in the 4-3 win.

Mohamed Salah created a slice of history with his opening goal in Liverpool's thrilling 4-3 win over Leeds United this afternoon.

The Egypt international opened the scoring from the penalty spot early on at Anfield, setting the tone for a madcap seven-goal classic which was eventually decided by Salah from the penalty spot again.

However, it was his first goal which created history as he became only the second player to score on the opening day of a Premier League season for four successive years.

Salah, who has now found the back of the net in the curtain-raisers of 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21, equals Teddy Sheringham's record.

The goal was also Salah's 50th home goal in the Premier League, reaching that figure in just 63 appearances - second to only Alan Shearer in the competition's history.

The 28-year-old went on to net a hat-trick on the opening day, becoming the first Liverpool player to achieve that feat since John Aldridge in 1988-89.

Liverpool have now also won their last 35 Premier League games in which Salah has scored - another Premier League record, taking over Wayne Rooney's run of wins when scoring with Manchester United from September 2008 to February 2011.
