Tommy Smith wants more passion from Simon Mignolet

Former Liverpool defender Tommy Smith reveals that he wants current Reds goalkeeper Simon Mignolet to show more passion when playing for the club.

Former Liverpool defender Tommy Smith has revealed that he wants current Reds goalkeeper Simon Mignolet to show more passion when playing for the club.

Mignolet has been ever-present for the Anfield side this season, but the goalkeeper was at fault for conceding a goal in Liverpool's recent defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

"The Reds really are starting to play well. They deserved something out of that game and are really showing they are top four material – if not better," wrote Smith in the Liverpool Echo.

"But, like any side, there is room for improvement. I want to see Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling work on their passing and I want to see more passion from Simon Mignolet. I know the Belgium goalie is a laid back character but I want to see the Liverpool goalie be a real presence in that box.

"I want to see him shouting, screaming and being an intimidating presence. Mignolet was at fault for City's second goal – he knows that and doesn't need anyone to tell him – but I expected to see him react differently."

Mignolet joined Liverpool from Sunderland in the summer of 2013 for a fee of £9m.
