Southampton end Liverpool's unbeaten run

Dejan Lovren's goal earns Southampton a 1-0 win over previously unbeaten Liverpool at Anfield.

Liverpool's unbeaten start to the Premier League season ended on Saturday as Southampton claimed a 1-0 win at Anfield.

Both sides were allowed to play their natural passing game early on, but chances were hard to come by due to some stubborn defending.

Steven Gerrard came closest to a goal for his side in the first half when he unleashed a powerful effort from outside the box, but Artur Boruc reacted well to push the ball to safety.

Adam Lallana proved to be a difficult opponent for the home defence to keep quiet and the midfielder was involved in the best move of the first period from the hosts, with Rickie Lambert eventually firing a shot straight at Simon Mignolet.

Southampton were ahead in the 53rd minute when Dejan Lovren beat off competition from Daniel Agger to head past Mignolet.

Boruc was forced into action again by Gerrard when the Liverpool captain targeted the bottom corner with a free kick, with the former Celtic goalkeeper once more tipping the ball past the post.

Southampton were close to doubling their lead but Mignolet displayed great reactions to produce a double save from Saints defender Luke Shaw.

Liverpool pushed for a way back into the match but their impressive start to the season ended as Southampton held on to claim the three points.
