Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood expecting Christian Benteke stay

Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood believes that striker Christian Benteke will still be at the club next season.

Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood has backed striker Christian Benteke to remain at the club this summer.

The Belgian international has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool in recent weeks.

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are also understood to be interested in the 24-year-old, who reportedly has a £32.5m release clause in his contract.

When asked about Benteke's future, Sherwood told Sky Sports News: "I think he stays. I think Liverpool – I looked the other day – have six or seven strikers at the club. Now I'm not sure how many they actually need. We know Christian is a very good player and we want to keep hold of him.

"If someone matches that buy-out clause there is nothing we can do about it but until that happens he is an Aston Villa player and we are all very pleased about that."

Benteke scored 16 goals in 35 appearances for Aston Villa last season.
