Ashley Cole 'wanted by New York City'

Former Chelsea and England defender Ashley Cole could leave Roma to move to the MLS with New York City FC, according to reports.

Roma defender Ashley Cole could reportedly follow former Chelsea teammate Frank Lampard in joining New York City.

The new MLS franchise, jointly owned by Manchester City and the New York Yankees, have been looking to recruit top players from Europe in a bid to make an impression during their first season.

The People claims that 107-times capped England international Cole is the kind of player that they are looking for, and the left-back may become available following a below-par start to life with the Serie A giants.

Lampard, who, like Cole, left Stamford Bridge in the summer, has been preparing for his role with New York City with a loan spell at Manchester City.
