Preview: Northampton Town vs. Peterborough United - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Monday's League One clash between Northampton Town and Peterborough United, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Managerless Northampton Town will look to end a six-game winless league run when they welcome Peterborough United to Sixfields on Monday.

The Cobblers are languishing in 21st position, while the visitors are sitting in 15th place in the League One table.

Northampton are currently searching for a new permanent manager after Jon Brady announced his resignation following Tuesday's 2-0 defeat to Stevenage.

The 49-year-old felt that it was time to leave the club after taking charge of his 200th game as Northampton boss, bringing an end to his three-and-half-year tenure.

Brady had overseen a six-game winless league run since Northampton recorded their most recent league win on October 26, leaving them in the relegation zone with 18 points from as many matches.

Ian Sampson has stepped up from his role as assistant manager to take over the reins on an interim basis, and while his side may be low on confidence, they have at least enjoyed success in recent home matches, having taken seven points from their last three league games at Sixfields.

The Cobblers have only won one of their last 10 league games against Peterborough (D1, L8), but that sole victory did take place in their most recent home meeting in August 2023.

After finishing in the top six in the last two seasons, Peterborough have significant work to do if they are to achieve a third-consecutive playoff finish.

Posh are currently sitting in 15th place and 10 points adrift of the League One playoff places after winning six, drawing three and losing eight of their 17 matches.

Peterborough have struggled to pick up points in recent weeks, having lost three of their previous four matches in the third tier, including defeats in their last two outings against Reading and Burton Albion.

They fell to a narrow 2-1 loss against the Royals at the Weston Homes Stadium, before they lost 1-0 in Wednesday's home clash against Darren Ferguson's former side Burton.

As they now turn their focus to Monday's contest, Peterborough can draw inspiration from the fact that they have won eight of their previous nine league games against Northampton, including a dominant 5-1 home victory when the two sides last faced off in March.

Team News

Northampton are having to cope with a lengthy injury list, which includes Ali Koiki, Luke Mbete, Patrick Brough, Tyler Magloire, Jack Baldwin and Callum Morton.

Goalkeeper Lee Burge is set to miss a second straight game with a knee injury, ensuring that Nik Tzanev will retain his place for Monday's fixture.

Nesta Guinness-Walker and Ben Fox will have to be assessed after they were forced off against Stevenage, while Tom Eaves will serve a one-match suspension after being sent off in the 28th minute of Tuesday's defeat.

As for the visitors, Ferguson has confirmed that Kwame Poku will be out for three months after he picked up a hamstring injury in Wednesday's clash with Burton.

The visitors are also expected to be without the services of Jed Steer, Mahamdaou Susoho and Bradley Ihionvien.

In positive news, Emmanuel Fernandez could return to the starting lineup after serving a one-match ban for an accumulation of yellow cards.

Northampton Town possible starting lineup:
Tzanev; Odimayo, McGowan, Guthrie, McCarron; Chouchane, Hondermarck; Pinnock, McGeehan, Hoskins; Roberts

Peterborough United possible starting lineup:
Bilokapic; Katongo, Wallin, Nevett, Curtis; De Havilland, Collins; Hayes, Randall, Odoh; Jones

We say: Northampton Town 1-3 Peterborough United

Northampton's injury crisis has had an adverse effect on their recent form, and we think that the Cobblers could experience another disappointing result on Monday, especially as they tend to struggle in meetings with Peterborough, who we believe will do enough to clinch all three points.
