DR Congo international Gabriel Zakuani feels that he needs to leave Peterborough United for the good of his career.

Peterborough United defender Gabriel Zakuani has asked the club to place him on the transfer list.

Posh, who have been relegated to League One, recently offered the 26-year-old a new three-year contract, but he has decided that the time is right for him to leave London Road.

"I have spent five very happy years at Peterborough, but I am a very ambitious person and I want to play as high as I can in my career," he told the club's official website. "My international career is very important to me and it was a real honour to represent my country in the African Cup of Nations.

"I want to continue playing for my country and feel I have to give myself every chance of being selected by the national coach. I have always given 100% for the cause and this was a very difficult decision for me to make."

Zakuani originally joined Peterborough on a loan basis from Fulham in 2008, before signing a permanent deal in January 2009.
