Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has claimed that becoming the first team to retain the Champions League provides the squad with a "fantastic motivation" this term.
No club has won back-to-back European Cups in its current guise, but the Italian thinks that his side have the ability to do so in this year's competition.
He told reporters ahead of his side's meeting with Schalke 04 in the last 16: "Defending the Champions League title is a fantastic motivation.
"Last year we were here with the dream of winning the Champions League. Now we have the same dream. History says it will be really difficult, almost impossible, but we have to try.
"I am not worried. Motivation is always high, as it is in the league. We are top of the league. We are Champions League holders and will give our all to defend the title."
Ancelotti led Los Blancos to their 10th European crown last season as they beat local rivals Atletico Madrid 4-1 in the final in Portugal.
