Both Brian McDermott and Martin O'Neill reportedly emerge as the two favourites to take over as Republic of Ireland manager from Giovanni Trapattoni.

Brian McDermott and Martin O'Neill have reportedly emerged as the top two candidates to take over as Republic of Ireland manager when Giovanni Trapattoni's tenure as coach comes to an end.

Both McDermott and O'Neill have both recently been sacked as managers of Reading and Sunderland respectively, and according to ESPN, the duo are the front-runners to replace the Italian as the Ireland coach.

The 74-year-old Trapattoni has come under pressure during Ireland's World Cup qualifying campaign, and the FAI are considering a change with both former Premier League bosses in their thinking.

O'Neill was sacked on Saturday evening, while former Royals boss McDermott was relieved of his duties on March 11.
