Mauricio Pochettino: 'Consistency important for top-four finish'

Mauricio Pochettino wants Tottenham Hotspur to maintain the standards reached in their 5-1 win over Stoke City for the rest of the season in a bid to finish in the top four.

Mauricio Pochettino has urged Tottenham Hotspur to maintain the standards reached in their 5-1 win over Stoke City for the rest of the season.

The Lilywhites had drawn two and lost two in the Premier League prior to Saturday's match against the Potters but got back to winning ways in style.

A Ryan Shawcross own goal put Spurs ahead and Son Heung-min doubled the lead after the break before Harry Kane added two more and Christian Eriksen made it five.

Although Pochettino has written off Tottenham's title challenge, he insists that a top-four finish is within reach providing the team can remain consistent.

"The performance was very good, a very great performance from the team, and it is not easy to score five. But I am not surprised by the performance, it was like against Watford and West Brom," the Argentine told BBC Sport.

"That is how we need to play from now. Consistency between now and the end of the season is so important if we want to finish in the top four. The team showed their true quality.

"This season the team was so determined to show that they can compete in the Champions League and when you mix with the Premier League that maybe it was a bit of a distraction. Maybe that was the reason.

"But now we can only be focused on the Premier League and winning games. It's important to be ready for the next game on Wednesday (against Brighton & Hove Albion)."

The result moves Spurs above Arsenal and into fifth place in the table on goal difference.
