Ange Postecoglou singles out Son Heung-min, Cristian Romero, James Maddison for special praise after Tottenham Hotspur's 5-2 thrashing of Burnley.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou singled out three players for special praise after the Lilywhites recovered from a nightmare start to thrash Burnley 5-2 at Turf Moor.

The Lilywhites remain unbeaten and have now won three in a row under the Australian thanks to a magnificent comeback success, having conceded after just four minutes to Lyle Foster.

Son Heung-min's delicate chip levelled matters for Spurs, though, before centre-back Cristian Romero crashed home a thunderous strike from the edge of the area to propel Tottenham into the lead before the break.

The floodgates had well and truly opened for the visitors by that point, and with 54 minutes gone, James Maddison - who has already endeared himself to the Spurs faithful - picked out the bottom corner with aplomb to increase Tottenham's advantage.

Postecoglou's front-footed Tottenham were not satisfied with just the three strikes, though, and Son netted another two goals in a three-minute spell to complete a terrific Turf Moor treble, before Josh Brownhill struck another consolation for the hosts.

All three of Spurs' goalscorers on the day - Son, Romero and Maddison - were appointed to Postecoglou's leadership group at the start of the season, with ex-captain Hugo Lloris out of favour and Harry Kane departing for Bayern Munich.

Speaking to reporters in his post-game press conference, Postecoglou lauded the trio for "embracing" their responsibilities as leaders, while also hailing the 'resilience' shown by Maddison during the earliest days of his Spurs career.

"I thought today was a real testament to Sonny, Madders and Romero," football.london quotes Posteocglou as saying.

"They all scored but those three I've thrust into leadership positions and the way they've embraced that responsibility with not only words but actions, not just on game day but on a daily basis and that's as encouraging for me as anything because as fantastic players as they are individually they've all really bought into that team ethic.

"Madders is one of those. He is so creative and today he showed how clinical he is in front of goal and his preparedness to work hard for the team I think is a great example.

"I've only got to know him recently as a person but he's a very strong, resilient guy. He's mentally strong and he likes, not to be targeted, but he wants the ball and he wants to be in those situations, he has that quality."

Tottenham netted a quintet of goals against Vincent Kompany's men without any recognised central strikers in the XI, as Richarlison started on the bench following a recent injury while Brennan Johnson missed out entirely following his deadline-day signing.

However, Postecoglou took the time to express his delight at Johnson's arrival, and he believes the Welshman will be a perfect fit in North London, adding: "Just another exciting young player. He's a real threat in the front third and he's a bit different to what we've already got.

"He's young, ambitious. It's no secret that that's been the model for me, not just here but wherever I've gone. It's just as much about the person you're bringing in as the footballer.

"Looking at him, he's going to fit in really well with this group because he's really ambitious and hungry and he wants to take his game to another level. The technical and the physical attributes he has I think he should fit in really well with us."

Tottenham rose to second in the Premier League table courtesy of Saturday's win, and the Lilywhites return to action at home to Sheffield United on September 16 before the first North London derby of the season at Arsenal on September 24.
