Udinese 2-1 AZ Alkmaar

A 2-1 win on the night is not enough for Udinese as they exit the Europa League 3-2 on aggregate against AZ Alkmaar.

A 2-1 win on the night was not enough for Udinese as they exited the Europa League 3-2 on aggregate against AZ Alkmaar.

The Serie A side got off to the best start as Nick Viergever was sent off for bringing down Antonio Floro Flores in the area after only five minutes. Antonio Di Natale stepped up to dispatch the penalty into the net.

It got better for Udinese as they levelled the tie on aggregate when Di Natale rifled the ball in from a tight angle on 15 minutes.

Despite the great start their chances of progression were dealt a blow before the break when Erik Falkenburg grabbed a vital away goal for the Dutch side.

Alkmaar could have killed off the tie after the interval when the referee pointed to the penalty spot following Maurizio Domizzi's foul on Brett Holman. However, Rasmus Elm smahsed his effort over the bar.

The hosts pressured their opponents until the final whistle, but they were unable to find the two goals that would have taken them through to the quarter-finals.
