Chris Coleman will meet with representatives of the Welsh FA to discuss the vacant manager's position.
The 41-year-old is currently out of employment following his decision to leave Greek side Larissa earlier this month.
Names such as Ian Rush and Ryan Giggs have been linked with the post but the former Fulham and Coventry City boss now appears to be favourite to replace close friend Gary Speed, who died in November.
"I will meet with the FAW this week to discuss the situation," he said.
"It is a very sensitive situation so if I am offered the job and I accept it I will have mixed emotions."
Coleman made 32 appearances for Wales from 1992 to 2002 before his playing career was cut short by injury.
