Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez praises for his players for their performance against Newcastle United and laments the sending off of Maynor Figueroa.

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez has said that he is "proud" of his players' performance against Newcastle United in the Premier League on Monday.

The Latics suffered a 3-0 defeat at St James' Park and played most of the game with 10 men after Maynor Figueroa was sent off in the 13th minute.

"It became a very, very difficult game in 10 minutes, giving up a two-goal cushion and a man down," Martinez told Sky Sports News.

"But you will get adversity in football and I'm proud of our reaction in the second half, we never gave up or felt sorry for ourselves."

Martinez also criticised the referee's decision to dismiss Figueroa for his challenge on Papiss Cisse.

"It was a big decision, I think he needed to be certain about a decision like that," he said. "The ball was between the two players, Maynor Figueroa is entitled to challenge for that ball and I thought it was shoulder-to-shoulder.

"It was a fair race and both players challenged for the ball. You expect the defender to be strong and the striker to go down easily.

"I think a penalty and a red card is too much punishment, I thought it was harsh."

The defeat leaves Wigan just two points above the relegation zone in 16th.
