Sam Warburton will return from injury earlier than expected by playing for Cardiff Blues on Friday night.

Cardiff Blues director of rugby Phil Davies has revealed that Sam Warburton will make his return from injury for his side on Friday.

The 24-year-old has not played since tearing his hamstring during the British and Irish Lions' second Test defeat to Australia in June and was expected to be out of action for three to four months.

However, Davies has confirmed that Warburton will play some part for the Blues against Leinster in the RaboDirect Pro12 on Friday.

"He was knocking the door down to play which is fantastic," Davies told the club's official website.

"Sam wants to play and he has done a phenomenal job, along with the physios and medical department, to get back so soon.

"He is five weeks ahead of schedule and that is down to his diligence and also the work of the team here."

It is unclear as to whether or not Warburton will be ready for international selection ahead of Wales's autumn schedule.
