Juan Martin Del Potro has advanced into round two of the Madrid Masters after a 6-4 6-2 victory over Florian Mayer.
Mayer, who has given Del Porto problems in the past, started the match well and was unlucky not to break the Argentine at 1-1 in the opening set.
The match remained on serve, however, until 4-5, when Del Potro broke to claim the opening set and move ahead in the match.
In truth, the second set was much less of a contest, with Del Porto storming into a 4-0 lead with some impressive groundstrokes.
Mayer did respond, securing two games in a row, but it was too little too late as Del Potro broke once more to claim the third 6-2, and with it the victory.
Del Potro will face experienced Russian Mikhail Youzhny in the next round.
