Venus Williams begins her bid for a second Olympic gold medal with a 6-3 6-1 victory over Italian ninth seed Sara Errani.

Venus Williams has knocked out ninth seed Sara Errani in the opening round of the women's singles at London 2012.

The American broke the Errani serve at the first time of asking in the second game but was pegged back immediately by the Italian.

The five-time Wimbledon champion and gold medallist from 2000 came back though and went on to take the first set 6-3.

The second set was much easier for Williams, who broke the French Open finalist's serve three times, going on to take the set 6-1 in under half an hour.

The 32-year-old next takes on fellow North American Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada in the second round.
