Southampton and Arsenal play out four-goal thriller

Southampton and Arsenal share the spoils as the sides draw 2-2 at St Mary's in the Premier League.

Southampton and Arsenal have shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw at St Mary's in the Premier League this evening, with Arsene Wenger's side finishing with 10 men.

Southampton dominated the opening exchanges of the game and they almost took the lead when Jay Rodriguez found 18-year-old striker Sam Gallagher, but his effort was saved at the bottom corner by Wojciech Szczesny.

Morgan Schneiderlin was next in for the hosts as his right-footed shot from the centre of the box flew wide of the left post, with the midfielder having picked up the knock-down from a corner.

Saints grabbed the lead their early play deserved in the 21st minute as Luke Shaw delivered a teasing ball into the box, which was met by Jose Fonte, who leapt highest to head home from six yards out.

Gallagher could have doubled Southampton's lead as Arsenal looked shaky, but the youngster flashed his shot from the centre of the box wide after being found with a ball from Calum Chambers.

Arsenal attempted to force a comeback late on in the half as Serge Gnabry tried an enticing through-ball, but Olivier Giroud was ruled out for offside as he made his way towards goal.

Wenger's men took their momentum into the second half and they found their equaliser straight away as Giroud was picked out by Bacary Sagna, allowing the striker to tuck home and level the scores.

Things got even better for the Gunners in the 52nd minute when Mesut Ozil found Santi Cazorla, who lashed home an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner of the Southampton goal.

However, Arsenal's lead was not to last long as Saints found an instant reply through Adam Lallana, who teamed up with Rodriguez to convert from the centre of the box.

Arsenal's hopes of pulling off a complete comeback were dashed in the 80th minute when Mathieu Flamini was shown a straight red card for a two-footed lunge, leaving his side to hang onto a 2-2 draw away from home.
