Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta has agreed a new one-year deal with the FA Cup holders.
The 33-year-old was out of contract with the Gunners, but he will now spend a fifth year in North London.
Arteta started just six Premier League matches for the club last season, due to a number of injury problems, but manager Arsene Wenger expects him to play a bigger part in the forthcoming campaign.
"He will stay with us for one more year because he has extended his contract," Wenger confirmed to Arsenal's official website.
"He's one of the leaders in the club because he's the captain of the team. I expect him to contribute much more than last season but he also faces a battle.
"With the number of games we have ahead, we could use his experience, his desire and his quality as it will be vital for next season."
Arteta has scored 16 goals in 136 appearances for the Gunners.
