Atletico, who need to avoid defeat to win their first league title for 18 years, got off to a terrible start when first Diego Costa, then Arda Turan had to be substituted with injuries.

The pair both broke down in tears after coming off and look likely to now miss next weekend's Champions League final against city rivals Real Madrid.

Barca took the lead in the 34th minute when Alexis Sanchez unleashed a vicious strike from a tight angle that flew past Thibaut Courtois and into the net off the underside of the crossbar.

As things stand, Barcelona will draw level on points with Atletico and win their fifth title in six years thanks to their superior head-to-head record.
