Javier Mascherano has revealed that his Barcelona and Argentina teammate Lionel Messi "has made a fantastic recovery" from his recent injury troubles.
The 26-year-old has not played competitive football since November after picking up a thigh injury, but the forward has stepped up his recovery in the last couple of weeks.
"I have spoken to Leo during his injury. I know that he is fine, he has made a fantastic recovery," Mascherano told TyC Sports.
"We are waiting for his return with open arms, both in Barcelona and with the national team, as he is important in both cases. The thing that makes him happy is being on the pitch, so hopefully he can get comfortable quickly.
"Hopefully everyone can reach [the World Cup] healthy and can be at their best version after a long season."
Messi is expected to return to first-team training with Barcelona after the winter break in Spain.
