Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy is reportedly considering whether to leave Chelsea with his first-team position currently in jeopardy.

Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy is reportedly uncertain to pen a new long-term contract at Chelsea.

The £22m move to sign the Senegal international in September 2020 is regarded as one of Chelsea's best pieces of business during the last few years.

As well as currently making 104 appearances during that time, Mendy played an instrumental part in the club winning the Champions League in his first season.

However, the 30-year-old performed below par in the early weeks of this season, and a combination of his form and an injury led to deputy Kepa Arrizabalaga securing another opportunity in the side.

Arrizabalaga has since taken his chance under Graham Potter, at one point being seconds away from recording six successive clean sheets in all competitions.

A foot injury to the former club-record signing led to Mendy regaining his spot between the sticks ahead of the World Cup, failing to keep a shutout in four starts as Chelsea produced their worst period of form since Potter's arrival.

Nevertheless, after the tournament in Qatar, Potter will have a fresh decision to make with regards to his goalkeeping position, with Arrizabalaga likely to return if fit.

According to the Daily Mail, Mendy will take time to consider his next move due to the current situation at Stamford Bridge.

While he still has two-and-a-half years remaining on his existing terms, there will come a time when Chelsea are keen to act with a new contract or a sale.

As a consequence of helping Senegal to the Africa Cup of Nations at the start of 2022, Mendy's stock is still high, but he turns 31 years of age in March.

From a goalkeeping perspective, any admirers will not necessarily regard that as a negative, yet his contract having fewer than two years remaining at any stage would weaken Chelsea's position at the negotiating table.

The report adds that Potter may also give consideration to trying to sign Spain international Robert Sanchez from his former club Brighton & Hove Albion.

Sanchez has come through the academy setup at Brighton to make 79 appearances, but the 24-year-old has the same amount of time remaining on his contract as Mendy.

The Seagulls are likely to sit down with Sanchez's representatives in the near future with the stopper having been named in his nation's World Cup squad.
