Phil Jagielka: 'Every player is fighting for England place'

Phil Jagielka says that no player in the England squad is guaranteed a place for next summer's European Championships in France.

England defender Phil Jagielka has claimed that no player's position in the team is safe ahead of next summer's European Championships in France.

Roy Hodgson's side, who have secured qualification to the finals, kept their 100% record going by grabbing a 2-0 win over Estonia on Friday.

Despite being named captain for tonight's qualifier against Lithuania, Jagielka has no illusions that his place in the team is safe.

"A lot will depend on injuries and form for your club, but the opportunities in the meet-ups between now and France are going to be slim and if you are fortunate enough to put the shirt on you have got to prove to Roy that you are a good footballer and you can perform in this team, and perform well," the Daily Star quotes Jagielka as saying.

"We want to give him a little bit more of a headache over the selection of the first eleven and being sure of being in his squad for the finals in France."

Jagielka takes the captain's armband due to the absence of Wayne Rooney and Gary Cahill.
