Lothar Matthaus: 'World Cup over for Sami Khedira'

Former Germany captain Lothar Matthaus believes that Sami Khedira will not be fit enough in time for next year's World Cup following knee ligament damage.

Former Germany captain Lothar Matthaus has claimed that Sami Khedira will miss next year's World Cup due to a knee ligament injury for the midfielder.

Khedira recently underwent surgery after suffering the problem during Friday's friendly with Italy.

Despite German hopes over his possible involvement at next year's tournament in Brazil, Matthaus is convinced that Khedira will not be fit enough in time.

"I think that's it for the World Cup for Sami Khedira," he told Sky Germany. "I know from my own injuries that he will not make it to the summer at a top level."

Germany are back in action on Friday when they face England in a friendly at Wembley Stadium.
