England and Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard thinks that Jonjo Shelvey deserves his call-up with the Three Lions and insists that he will only get better.

Liverpool and England captain Steven Gerrard believes that club teammate Jonjo Shelvey deserves his England call-up.

Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson included the 20-year-old in his squad for their upcoming 2014 World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Poland following a positive start to the season for the Reds.

"I'm really pleased for Jonjo," Gerrard told the Liverpool Echo. "He has been improving all the time since he arrived at Liverpool and has grown into a good footballer with good vision who can create and score goals.

"He also listens which means he will only get better with more games and experience."

Shelvey has appeared for the Reds 46 times since moving to Merseyside from Charlton Athletic two years ago.
