Brendan Rodgers believes that Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is capable of matching Ryan Giggs in prolonging his career in the top flight.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is confident that skipper Steven Gerrard can emulate Manchester United duo Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes by playing into his late 30s.

The England captain, who is expected to be offered a new contract at Anfield, has played every single minute of the Reds' Premier League campaign this season.

The 32-year-old, who netted the winner in yesterday's 2-1 win over Aston Villa, recently claimed that he feels fit enough to prolong his career.

"Can Gerrard play on into his late 30s? Absolutely, no question about that," the Daily Mail quotes Rodgers as saying.

"Guys who do that like Giggs, Scholes, [Gary] McAllister, it is not what they are doing now, it is what they have done earlier in their careers, when they were 17, 18, 19, 20."

The midfielder has almost racked up 500 appearances for the Premier League outfit.
