Wolverhampton Wanderers announce the loan signing of Manchester City midfielder Tommy Doyle.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have announced the loan signing of Manchester City midfielder Tommy Doyle.

Over the past week, the Premier League champions have been attempting to acquire the services of Wolves star Matheus Nunes in a separate deal.

According to widespread reports, that transfer is on the brink of completion, but Wolves have taken the opportunity to agree for a City player to move in the opposite direction.

While Doyle has made seven appearances for boyhood club City, he enhanced his reputation during a loan spell with Sheffield United in the Championship during 2022-23.

As well as impressing in the second tier, the England Under-21 international scored a stunning winning goal in the FA Cup quarter-final with Blackburn Rovers.

The 21-year-old will now get the opportunity to play in the Premier League with Wolves, who have signed him on an initial season-long loan.

Wolves add that they have the option to purchase Doyle on a permanent deal at the end of the campaign, with reports indicating that fee is somewhere between £4.3m and £5m as well as City possessing a sell-on clause.

Sporting director Matt Hobbs told the club's official website: "I've talked before about players coming here with the hunger to kick on again, and Tommy is another one of those.

"He'll give us something different – he's a good age profile, a good character profile, but most importantly a good footballer. He ticks a lot of boxes for us.

"He went to Championship and forced his way into the team, and showed he was beyond that. The next challenge is to prove he can do it every week in the Premier League and we're here to help him, Gary is here to develop him as a Premier League midfielder like he was, so I think we're a perfect place for Tommy to show what he's capable of."

After a frustrating summer in the transfer market, Wolves have now signed three players in less than 24 hours, Santiago Bueno and Enso Gonzalez joining from Girona and Club Libertad on Thursday.
