Quinton Fortune: 'Manchester United back on the way up under Jose Mourinho'

Fortune: 'Man Utd improving under Mourinho'

Former Manchester United midfielder Quinton Fortune believes that they could launch a title challenge next season, despite being 18 points off the pace so far this term.

Former Manchester United midfielder Quinton Fortune has claimed that the club are back on an upward trajectory under the guidance of Jose Mourinho.

The Red Devils have already lifted the Community Shield, EFL Cup and Europa League during Mourinho's time in charge of the club, having suffered a significant downturn in success following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.

Fortune acknowledged that United's local rivals Manchester City have been "outstanding" this season, but suggested that his former club could be capable of launching a title challenge next term.

"It's a little bit frustrating to see us in second position, but City has been outstanding this season and it will be a miracle to catch them," Fortune told PA.

"They are going to have to lose every single game and we're going to have to win every single game, but the signs are there for next season and there's still a lot to play for this season. The way we're playing looks very difficult to beat in any competition, so I hope next season we'll go that extra step further and win the league.

"I am sure there will be changes in the summer. The manager will want to strengthen the team and that's part of being a Manchester United player. You want to improve, you want to have competition and I am sure the manager will strengthen his team and try to win the league next year."

United currently sit 18 points adrift of leaders City ahead of their trip to face Crystal Palace on Monday night.
