Manchester United striker Federico Macheda could be in line for a January loan move to Wigan, according to the Daily Mail.
Latics boss Roberto Martinez had been keen to begin talks with the Italian last month, but Sir Alex Ferguson's run of injuries meant that he was unwilling to discuss the transfer.
Dimitar Berbatov and Javier Hernandez have since returned to action for United, suggesting that Macheda's opportunities will be limited once more this season.
Macheda spent the second half of last season on loan at Sampdoria, but Ferguson would prefer the player to remain in England this time around, in order to monitor his progress.
The 20-year-old striker has scored five goals in 32 appearances since joining United in 2007.
