Manchester United have reportedly decided to try to agree terms over a new long-term contract with Chris Smalling.
The England international has made 303 appearances for United and the centre-back is approaching the ninth anniversary since his arrival at Old Trafford, but the 28-year-old's future remains up in the air.
United are able to trigger a 12-month extension to his deal, but the England international continues to be linked with a transfer at the end of the season.
However, according to the Daily Mail, United want to ensure that Smalling remains at the club for a number of seasons and are prepared to hand the former Fulham man a pay-rise.
United will be in the market for a new centre-back in January, but it appears that there is a desire to keep Smalling in the first-team squad.
