Manchester United have insisted that Wayne Rooney is not for sale amid rumours that he wants a move away from the Premier League champions.
It was suggested on Wednesday night that the striker had informed manager Sir Alex Ferguson two weeks ago that he wanted to leave Old Trafford.
Ferguson announced earlier on Wednesday that he would be stepping down at the club in the summer following 26 years in charge of the Red Devils.
When asked if Rooney would be exiting the Red Devils, a club spokesman told BBC Sport: "Wayne Rooney is not for sale."
Rooney previously asked to leave United in October 2010 before signing a new five-year contract extension soon after.
