Millwall come from behind to snatch late victory against Charlton Athletic

Millwall boost their survival hopes by snatching a late 2-1 victory over Charlton Athletic at The Den.

Millwall came from behind late in the second half to seal a crucial 2-1 victory over Charlton Athletic at The Den in this afternoon's Championship clash.

Neither side were able to get on top and really trouble the goalkeepers in the first half, but Millwall were given a slice of luck when Charlton went down to 10 men.

Chris Solly was handed a red card by the referee for blocking a shot with his hand on the line, but the hosts were unable to make the most of the penalty opportunity.

Lee Gregory stepped up to take it, but his effort was palmed away by Stephen Henderson, and despite a handful of chances later on, the forward was unable to strike by the half-time whistle.

After the break, pressure was on for Millwall to ramp up the attack against a depleted side, but it was the 10 men of Charlton who struck in the second half.

Just minutes after Henderson made another crucial save to deny Shaun Williams, the visitors charged up the other end of the field and Alou Diarra managed to latch on to a cross from Morgan Fox and flicked the ball past the goalkeeper and into the net.

A vital goal finally came for Millwall in the closing stages of the contest when Magaye Gueye arrived at the back post to fire in an equalising goal from a tight angle.

Millwall continued to push for a winner and they were eventually rewarded in the dying minutes when Jos Hooiveld, who is on loan from Southampton, flicked in a goal from inside the six-yard box.

The Lions are now four points adrift of safety.
