Matt Targett signs long-term deal with Southampton

Southampton announce that defender Matt Targett has signed a new long-term contract at St Mary's.

Southampton defender Matt Targett has signed a new five-year contract with the Premier League club.

Targett has been with the Saints since he was eight years old and has made a total of 40 appearances for the first team since breaking into the senior setup.

The left-back spent much of the last campaign on the sidelines through injury but having made an impression during pre-season, the England Under-21 international is ready for more competitive action.

The 21-year-old told the club's official website: "It's a great way to kick off the season. I am really happy to sign. I've been at the club since I was eight so to extend my time here is only a good thing.

"Physically I feel good. I think I feel the best I've ever felt. I think the injury has only helped me improve physically and mentally.

"I have come back from it all and got my fitness back – I am feeling fitter and stronger so it's all positive at the moment."

Targett will be hoping to feature when Southampton host Swansea City on Saturday, August 12.
