League Two side Southend United have completed the signing of Danish defender Mads Ibenfeldt on a 12-month contract.
The 29-year-old had been on trial at Roots Hall following his release by Akademisk at the end of last season.
"My partner has a company that has moved to the UK and as I've always wanted to play in the English league at some point in my career, this was the perfect opportunity," he told the club's official website. "I have had lots of experience in Denmark but I wanted a new challenge and that's certainly what I'll get having joined Southend.
"Before signing I had a short trial with Gillingham. Things didn't work out there but I've really enjoyed myself since coming in on trial and I'm delighted to have signed.
"While my height means I'm good at heading the ball and quite strong, I also like to get the ball down and play good football, which is what the manager has said to me."
Ibenfeldt recently featured for the Shrimpers in friendly matches against Ipswich Town and Queens Park Rangers.
