Danny Murphy has claimed that Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe is not being given enough chances to score goals.
The Black Cats have failed to win any of their six Premier League games so far this season and currently prop up the table.
Murphy, who was a teammate of Defoe's at Tottenham Hotspur, has said that the Sunderland players must help the frontman to get back to his best.
"The problem is he is feeding on scraps," Murphy told talkSPORT. "He is a good finisher.
"I played with Jermain. He is a super talent, but if you are getting one or two chances a game and your confidence isn't high, then it's tough."
Defoe has scored two Premier League goals so far this term.
