Japanese number one Kei Nishikori has overcome Melbourne resident Marinko Matosevic in a five-set tussle to reach round two of the 2014 Australian Open.

Nishikori took 221 minutes to record a 6-3 5-7 6-2 4-6 6-2 victory, which sees the 2012 quarter-finalist set up a second-round clash with Serbia's Dusan Lajovic.

Two breaks of serve helped Nishikori win the opening set, in which he hit six winners and made just four unforced errors.

However, the rest of the contest was not such a cruise for the 24-year-old, who ended the match having made 44 winners and 50 unforced errors, as well as six double faults.
