Novak Djokovic through at French Open

World number two Novak Djokovic advances into the second round of the French Open at the expense of Joao Sousa.

Novak Djokovic booked his place in round two of the French Open this afternoon thanks to a 6-1 6-2 6-4 victory over Joao Sousa.

Former world number one Djokovic started brightly in Paris by making early inroads on Sousa's serve, but when he held a 4-1 lead in the opening set, play was suspended because of rain.

The players returned after just over an hour in the dressing rooms and Djokovic wasted little time in claiming another break to open up a one-set lead after 33 minutes of action.

Two further breaks of the Sousa service game in the second set put Djokovic firmly in the ascendancy and, although Sousa restored some hope by breaking to reduce the arrears to 4-2 and then 5-4 in the third set, 27-year-old Djokovic moved into the second round in under two hours.

The number two seed, who has never previously triumphed at Roland Garros, will now take on home favourite Jeremy Chardy.
