Flavia Pennetta ousts Casey Dellacqua to reach US Open quarter-finals

Flavia Pennetta beats Casey Dellacqua 7-5 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals of the US Open for the second straight year.

Flavia Pennetta reached the quarter-finals of the US Open this afternoon by overcoming Casey Dellacqua in straight sets.

Pennetta, who reached the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows last year and is seeded 11th in 2014, made the first break of the match to take a 2-1 lead but Dellacqua hit straight back.

Soon after, Italy's Pennetta again broke the Aussie, but once more Dellacqua wouldn't let her establish a two-game advantage.

Pennetta's third break of the opener took her 6-5 in front and this time she served out the set to move ahead.

The second was much simpler, with Pennetta moving 4-0 in front to complete a run of seven straight games before closing out the match 6-2.

She will face either top seed Serena Williams or Kaia Kanepi in the last eight.
