Arsene Wenger: 'Arsenal never considered launching a bid for Raheem Sterling'

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger insists that the club were never interested in signing Liverpool star Raheem Sterling, who is on his way to Manchester City.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that the club "never considered" trying to sign Raheem Sterling from Liverpool.

The 20-year-old is on the verge of joining Manchester City after a £49m fee was agreed with the Reds.

Arsenal were touted as a possible destination for the England international, who admitted earlier this year that he was flattered by the Gunners' interest.

However, Wenger has insisted that he never pondered launching a bid for the attacker as he already has players who fill Sterling's position.

"It is a good buy for Man City," Wenger told reporters. "It looked a done deal for a while because Sterling was adamant he wanted the move.

"It is an expensive one but they can afford it. We never considered it because he plays in an area where we have plenty of players.

"We have [Theo] Walcott, [Alex] Oxlade-Chamberlain, [Alexis] Sanchez, [Jack] Wilshere who can play wide, [Serge] Gnabry, so we have plenty of players and he's a wide player basically, or behind the striker."

Arsenal's transfer activity has been quiet so far having just added goalkeeper Petr Cech from Chelsea to the squad for a reported £11m fee.
